Starting Monday, 25 August 2025, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has raised its ticket prices—a change not seen since 2017.
What Has Changed?
- Basic Fare Increase: Commuters will now pay from ₹11 for the shortest trips (0–2 km), with rates increasing incrementally across distance slabs (e.g., ₹21 for 2–5 km, ₹32 for 5–12 km, ₹43 for 12–21 km, ₹54 for 21–32 km, and ₹64 for journeys exceeding 32 km).
- Airport Express Line: Fares have surged by up to ₹5 depending on the distance traveled.
- Hike Range: Overall fare adjustments are modest—ranging from ₹1 to ₹4 for regular routes and up to ₹5 for airport-bound travels.
Discounts Still in Effect
- Smart Card Users: Eligible for a 10% discount, with an additional 10% off during off-peak hours (before 8 AM, between 12 PM and 5 PM, and after 9 PM), effectively offering up to 20% savings.
- Holiday Pricing: Lower fare tiers also apply on Sundays and national holidays, e.g. trips of 0–2 km still cost ₹11—even on these days.
Why the Increase?
The DMRC describes the hike as “minimal” but necessary—needed to balance soaring operational costs, including electricity, maintenance, and inflation, while ensuring uninterrupted service and further network expansion.
How It Stacks Up Nationwide
Despite the increase, Delhi Metro remains relatively affordable:
- Bengaluru’s Namma Metro has the highest fares in India, with a maximum fare of ₹90 following a significant 2025 hike.
- Mumbai Metro tops out around ₹80.
- Hyderabad charges up to ₹69, while Chennai Metro is among the most budget-friendly, capping fares at ₹50 and offering 20% discounts to smart card users.
