On August 20, 2025, the Union of IT & ITES Employees (UNITE) staged protests in several Indian cities to denounce Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), alleging that job cuts might endanger up to 30,000 positions. The union, backed by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), warned that the layoffs could reach this magnitude and demanded immediate government interference.
UNITE criticized the abrupt nature of the announced terminations, arguing it endangers the career trajectories of thousands. To escalate the pressure, the union indicated plans for a coordinated global campaign in coordination with overseas labor groups, should authorities fail to act.
In rebuttal, TCS called the union’s claims “incorrect and misleading.” The company clarified that the workforce reduction would impact around 2% of its global employee base—that’s roughly 12,000 positions—not the 30,000 alleged by UNITE.
TCS further explained that this restructuring is designed to shape a “future-ready” organization emphasizing cloud, AI, and digital transformation. The affected employees are to receive severance benefits and transition support.
Moreover, the protests highlighted concerns around the content accessible at TCS’s Siruseri campus, where union members say employees lacked proper upskilling tools, forcing them to use alternate devices—though these claims have not been independently verified.
