On January 16, 2025, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission to revise the salaries and allowances of central government employees and pensioners.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the commission is expected to be established by 2026, aligning with the conclusion of the 7th Pay Commission’s term.
The 7th Pay Commission, constituted in 2016, is set to complete its term in 2026.
The 8th Pay Commission is anticipated to bring significant changes to the pay structure of central government employees and pensioners, including a proposed fitment factor of 2.28, which would raise the minimum pay by 34.1%, increasing it from ₹18,000 to ₹41,000.
The commission will also consider factors such as inflation, economic conditions, and labor standards to ensure fair compensation.
The establishment of the 8th Pay Commission underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the financial and professional needs of its workforce, aiming to implement the proposed changes effectively before the 7th Pay Commission’s tenure ends.
